Narcissus
Son of the river god Cephissus & the nymph Liriope. Rejected by the nymph Echo, fell in love with his own reflection, died next to the spring in which he saw himself.
Hippolytus
Son of Theseus; Theseus’ queen Phaedra fell in love w him. Repulsed by her passion, caused Phaedra to kill herself and leave a note accusing Hipp. of raping her. Theseus called upon Poseidon’s wrath; sent a sea monster to scare Hipp.’s horses, which trampled his carriage and dragged him to his death
Hades
Son of Titans Cronus & Rhea; rules the Underworld with his queen Persephone
Dionysus
God of wine and ecstasy, also known as a nature god of fruitfulness and vegetation. Son of Zeus and Semele, a daughter of Cadmus, king of Thebes
Bellerophon
Son of Glaucus. Wife of king Proetus of Argos, named Anteia or Stheneboea, loved him; he rejected her and she falsely accused him to Proetus, who sent him to Lycia to be killed. When the king, Iobates, recognized him as more than man, he married him to his daughter. Lost favour from gods, ended up dying in his attempt to reach heaven on the Pegasus
Minos
Ruler of Crete; son of Zeus and Europa. Obtained Cretan throne w help of Poseidon and colonized the Aegian islands. got rid of sea pirates. Married Pasiphae, mother of the minotaur. Sent seven athenian youths & seven maidens to be killed devoured by the minotaur every 9th year
Pegasus
A winged horse that sprang from the blood of medusa as she was beheaded by the hero Perseus
Pentheus
King of Thebes; denied Dionysus’ identity and was torn to pieces by the bacchantes when he attempted to spy on their activities. Mutilated by his mother, Agave, upon his death
Phaedra
Queen of Theseus who fell in love w Hippolytus. Killed herself after knowing of Hippolytus’ revulsion and left a note accusing him of rape.
Persephone
Daughter of Zeus and Demeter, also the wife of Hades
Agave
Daughter of Cadmus, the king and founder of Thebes; daughter of goddess Harmonia. Unknowingly mutilated her son, Pentheus, upon his murder by the Maenads. Carried her son’s head back to Thebes on a stick and only realized it was him when her father brought it to her attention
Perseus
Son of Zeus and Danae, slayed the Gorgon Medusa and rescued Andromeda from a sea monster
Minotaur
Monster of Crete that had the body of a man and the head of a bull. Killed by the hero Theseus.
Medusa
Mortal Gorgon w a head of snakes, often portrayed as a beautiful creature (unlike other Gorgons). Slain by Perseus, who cut off her head.
Hermaphroditus
A being partly male, partly female. Appeared in Cyprus. Son of Hermes and Aphrodite
Poseidon
God of the sea, earthquakes, and horses.
Cadmus
Founder of the city of Thebes. Followed a cow and built a town where she lay down.
Herakles
Son of Zeus and Alceme. Tricked by Hera to kill his wife Megara and thus because the servant of Eurystheus, who imposed upon him the 12 labors, which he completed and undertook further enterprises. Became immortal upon his death
Deianeira
Herakles fought the river god Achelous for her hand - the centaur Nessus tried to violate her and was killed by one of Herakles’ poisonous arrows. Told Dei to reserve the blood from his wound and smear Herakles with it so that he would love her forever. When, later, Herakles’ interest strayed, Dei. used the blood on him, poisoning and killing him.
Eurystheus
After Zeus swore that the next born child of the house of Perseid would become king (meant to be Herakles) Hera made it so Eurystheus would come first. Became Herakles’ master and imposed upon him the 12 labors
Hecate
Daughter of the Titan Perses and the nymph Asteria and has power over heaven, earth, and sea; hence, she bestows wealth and blessings of daily life
Ganymede
Son of Tros, King of Troy. Because of his unusual beauty, he was carried off by Zeus, disguised as an eagle, to serve as his cupbearer
Theseus
Son of Aegos, king of Athens, and Aethra. Slayed the Cretan Minotaur
Adonis
A youth of incredible beauty; the favorite of the goddess Aphrodite, who put his infant self in a box and asked Persephone to take care of him in the Underworld
Erechtheus
Born from the corn land and raised by the Goddess Athena, who established him in her temple at Athens. there is evidence that suggests he turned into a snake - an earth or ancestor spirit
Pirithous
The son of Ixion and the companion/ helper of Theseus in his many adventures, including the descent into Hades to carry off Persephone. However, they were detained by Hades until Herakles rescued Theseus but not Pirithous
Atlas
Son of Iapetus and Oceanid Clymene & brother of Prometheus. Condemned by Zeus to hold aloft the heavens. After being a Titan involved in the war against the gods
Anchises
Member of the junior branch of the Royal family of Troy; Aphrodite met him, fell in love, then lied about her immortality. Aeneas was born shortly after and for revealing the name of the child’s mother, Anchises was struck blind by lightning.
Demeter
Daughter of Cronus and Rhea; goddess of agriculture. Her name suggests that she is a mother
Myrrha
The mother of Adonis who was transformed into a myrrh tree after having had intercourse with her father, giving birth to Adonis as a tree.
Eumolpus
Mythical ancestor of the priestly clan of the Eumolpids at Eleusis, and the site of the Eleusinian Mysteries, the best known of the Greek Mystery cults.
Andromeda
Daughter of King Cepheus and Queen Cassiope of Joppa in Palestine and wife of Perseus. Perseus rescued her from a beast meant to take her for sacrifice to Poseidon, and had six sons and a daughter with her
Chimera
A fire breathing female monster resembling a lion in forepart, a goat in the middle, and a dragon behind. She devastated Caria and Lycis until she was slain by Bellerophon
Ariadne
Daughter of Pasiphae and the Cretan king of Minos. She fell in love w Theseus and helped him escape the Labyrinth after slaying the Minotaur
