Setting
Making the choice as to how many points to play when the score is tied one or two points before the game should be over, such as at 13 or 14 in a 15-point game.
Crosscourt
A shot hit diagonally into the opposite court.
Alley
The 1 1/2 foot-wide area on each side of the court that is used for doubles.
Game bird
(or shuttlecock?) The feathered cork or plastic missile that is hit in the game of badminton.
Dropshot
A shot that just clears the net, then falls close to it.
Clear
A high shot that goes over your opponent’s head and lands close to the backline. Also called a lob.
Drive
A hard-driven stroke that clears the net but does not go high enough for your opponent to smash.
Block
A soft shot, used primarily against a smash, in which there is no backswing or follow-through.
Match
A series of games. The winner must win two out of three games or three out of five to win the match.
Fault
Any infraction of the rules. It results in the loss of serve or in a point for the server.
Inning
The period of time during which a singles or doubles team is serving.
Carry
Called when the shuttle stays on the racket during a stroke. It is legal if the racket follows the intended line of flight. Also called throw.
Rally
A period of hitting the shuttle back and forth over the net-either during practice or during a game.
Side out
When the individual or team loses the serve and the other team gets its chance to serve.
Rush the serve
A tactic used mostly in doubles by the receiver to quickly attack a low serve.
