Mastitis Onset and Incidence
Incidence: 5% of lactating patients
Onset: 2-3 weeks postpartum
Risk factors: Stasis of milk, Nipple trauma
Mastitis causative agent
usually Staphylococcus aureus
Treatments of mastitis
Non pharmacologic: Continue breastfeeding Massage breasts Cold compresses Supportive bra
Pharmacologic: NSAIDS/ACETAMINOPHEN
Dicloxacillin 500mg four times a day
Cephalaxin 500mg four times a day
Clindamycin 300-450mg three times a day
Mastalgia treatment
Bromocriptine(especially for cyclical pain)
•Danazol: side effects of amenorrhea, weight gain, acne and hirsutism.
•Tamoxifen: studied to be effective in Italy, not FDA approved for this indication in US
•Non steroidal anti-inflammatory agents
