Masters Material Keypoints Flashcards
An electrical conductor is made up of 19 strands each with a diameter of 0.0837 inches. The approximate circular mil area of the conductor is approximately:
133,100 cmil
1 in = 1000 mil
0.0837 inches = 83.7 mil
83.7 mil x 83.7 mil = 7,005.69 cmil per strand
19 strands @ 7,0005.69 cmil = 133,108 cmil
Consulting Chapter 9, Table 8 133,108 cmil is close to 2/0 @ 133,100 cmil
When sizing short circuit and ground fault protection for motor circuits. Under what conditions are you allowed to round down to the next size OCPD?

When sizing short circuit and ground fault protection for motor circuits. Under what conditions are you allowed to round up to the next size OCPD?
Motor Branch Circuits art 430.52
430.52 (C)(1) exception 1 permits the ampere rating determined to be rounded up to the next standard rating of fuse given in 240.6(A).
A run of rigid metal conduit contains (6) size 4/0 AWG copper THW wires and (3) size 1 AWG copper THWN wires. The minimum trade size rigid metal conduit permitted for these wires is:
A. 1 1/4 inch
B. 1 1/2 inch
C. 2 inch
D. 2 1/2 inch
E. 3 inch
The cross-sectional area of the conductors must be first determined by using Chapter 9 Table 5.
THWN: 1 awg = 0.1562 sq in x 3 = 0.4868 sq in
THW 4/0awg = 0.3718 sq in x 6 = 2.2308 sq in
___________
Total conductor area 2.6994 sq in
Use Chapter 9 Table 4 to find RMC and the cross-sectional area over 2 wires/40 % to find a conduit larger than 2.6994 sq in. 3” RMC has a cross-sectional area of 3.000 sq in.
A resistance type heating element in an industrial electric space heater rated at not more than 48 amperes is required to be protected from overcurrent with a set of fuses or a circuit breaker with a rating not exceeding
48 A x 1.25 = 60 A
Section 424.22(B) requires that any resistance type heating element is required to be subdivided into loads not exceeding 48 amperes which are permitted to have OCPD rated at not more than 60 A. Electric heating loads are considered continuous.
A feeder protected by 800 ampere fuses is run from one part of a building to another under the floor in two parallel set of RMC with size 500kcmil copper RHW wires. The minimum size copper equipment grounding conductor permitted to be run in each conduit is:
A. 4 awg
B. 3 awg
C. 2 awg
D. 1 awg
E 1/0 awg
1/0 awg based of the overcurrent device and table 250.122
A service entrance with a 1000 ampere main circuit breaker is supplied with three parallel sets of size 400 kcmil copper THWN wires. A metal underground water pipe entering the building is used as a grounding electrode for the service. The minimum size copper grounding electrode conductor permitted to be run to the water pipe is:
3/0 awg based off the largest sum of the cross-sectional areas of the conductors.
3 sets x 400 kcmil = 1200 kcmil
table 250.102 (C)(1) grounding electrode conductor for 1200 kcmil is 3/0 copper
The copper THWN wires for a 480 volt, 3-phase feeder protected by 150 ampere time-delay fuses are increased in size from the minimum required 1/0 awg size to 3/0 awg to compensate for voltage drop. If the feeder is run in rigid nonmetallic conduit (PVC), the minimum size copper equipment conductor permitted to be run for this feeder is:
4 awg.
Since the conductor sizes are different, need to find the circulars for each in Chapter 9 Table 8.
3/0 awg = 167,800 cmils
1/0 awg = 105,600 cmils
_____________
1.589
Based off 150 A overcurrent protection, table 250.122 says that a 6 awg is required to be ran. Then the circular mils for 6 awg needs to be found.
6 awg = 26,240 cmils / 1.589 = 41,695 cmils; 4 awg is sized @ 41,740 cmils which would work.
A building served with 208/120 volt, 3-phase electrical system has a demand load or 750 amperes. The service consists of a single 1000 ampere main circuit breaker supplied with three parallel sets of service conductors each in a separate RMC. The neutral does not count as a current carrying conductor. The minimum size copper THWN ungrounded wire permitted for this service is:
400 kcmil
Section 240.4(C) requires the conductors to have an ampacity not less than the rating of the overcurrent device when the overcurrent device is rated in excess of 800 amps.
1000 A OCPD / 3 Sets run in Parallel = 333 A
When do you use the 60 Degree, 75 Degree and 90 Degree columns?
90 Degree for adjustments for the number of conductors and temperature derating
75 Degree for mostly everything that is terminated - Services, motors
60 Degree for anything less than 100A - Appliances most likely going to be the question
A single family dwelling has 100 amp service. What size feeder will be required to supply a 75 amp electric space heater and a 25 amp air conditioner?
An electric space heater is considered a continuous load.
75 A x 1.25 = 93.75 A
Since it is under 100 A, use 60 degree column for 2 awg
If you have 4 sets of 4 inch PVC with 500 kcmil THW copper wire in each pipe. what is the maximum size fused disconnect that can be installed?
500 kcmil copper = 380 A
380 A per 500kcmil x 4 sets = 1520 A
What is the expansion rate of 250 feet of PVC that goes from a temperature changed of -20 F to 80 F?
Per 352.44 the rate is 4.06 per 100 ft at a temp change of 100 F
250 ft is 2.5 times larger than 100 ft
4.06 x 2.5 = 10.15
