Is a stroking movement, used to start a massage, link manipulation and to finish the massage sequence. The manipulation is light, has even pressure, and is applied in rhythmical and continuous pattern to induce relaxation.

• venous circulation is improved, aiding the removal of congestion from burns

Involves a series of movements in which the tissues are lifted away from the underlying structures and compressed, pressure is intermittent, and should be light yet firm.

Movements include picking up, kneading, knuckling, pinching, rolling, frictions and scissoring.

-Benefits
•improvement of muscle tone, through the compression and relaxation of muscle fibres
• improvement in the blood and lymph circulation, as the pressure caused the vessels to empty and fill
•increased activity of the sebaceous glands

Is preformed in a brisk stimulating manner, rhythm is important as the fingers are continually breaking contact with the skin, irritation can occur if done incorrectly.

Movements include clapping and tapping.

-Benefits
•a fast vascular reaction because of the skins nervous response to the stimulate, this reaction, erythema, has a stimulating effect
• increased blood supply, which nourishes the tissues
•improvement in skin and muscle tone

Are applied on the nerve centre.

Movements include, static vibrations, where the pads of the fingers are placed on the nerve and the vibratory effect created by the therapists arms and hands is applied in one position. Running vibrations is where the vibratory effect is applied along s nerve path.

-Benefits
• stimulation of the nerves, inducing a feeling of well being
• gentle stimulation of the skin
