Massage
- systematic, manual manipulation of the body’s soft tissues and muscles
- movements such as rubbing, kneading, pressing, rolling, slapping and tapping are performed to promote blood and lymph circulation, relax tense muscles, relieve pain and restore metabolic balance
- benefits are both physical and mental
Holistic massage comes from the Greek term ?
-“holos” meaning whole, all, entire or total
- the approach of taking into consideration the whole body and environment when offering a treatment
Latin:
- massa means “that from which forms a lump
-massage can be a technique for removing “lumpiness” of the body, making it smooth
Greek:
- massein means “to knead”
- kneading is one of the fundamental movements used in this therapy
French:
- masser means the “to rub”
- the basis of all massage is rubbing the skin and tissues

- mass means “to touch or feel” which are both fundamental to massage
When performing a Holistic treatment the persons:
- mind, body and spirit is considered
- the person treated should be considered as a whole
- it is not just looking to treat the symptoms, but to establish the cause, whether it be internal or external
Homeostasis
- refers to the natural balance and stability of the body, mind and spirit needed
to maintain optimum health - condition in which the cells, tissues, glands, organs and systems of the body are work in harmony within themselves and with one another
- the maintenance of this environment is vital for the well-being of the whole body

- the use of massage has been recorded in china from 3000 BC
- the ancient Chinese called their technique amma and used specific movements on particular points of the body
- it was used for the promotion and restoration of health as well as for relaxation
Japan
- also used amma ( means push and pull) with similar pressure points and called the points tsubo
- then they went on to develop shiatsu often referred to as acupuncture without needles
India
- massage has also been used as part of traditional Ayurvedic medicine
- ayurveda from Hindu language
- ayurvedic ancient medical texts about arts of healing + prolonging life is still the basis of medical knowledge in india today
Greeks
- places great emphasis on the pursuit of health and well-being
- they made gymnastics and the use of massage part of their physical fitness rituals
- the Greek physician Herodicus (5th century BC) prolonged the lives of many of his patients with diet and exercise
- he performed massage using beneficial herbs + oils
- Hippocrates, a student of Herodicus later becomes known as the father of medicine
- his code of ethics (Hypocratic oath) is still in use today
- He believed all doctors needed to know massage for healing purposes and Hypocrates believed rubbing helped to treat illnesses

- gladiators were given massage before + after fighting to treat stiff and sore muscles and joints
