Mass Wasting Flashcards
Mass wasting
Downhill movement of weathered rock particles, soil by gravity.
(Sudden/violent/gradual)
Causes of mass wasting
Natural or man made causes make slopes unstable
Water seeps into soil, soil gets heavy and expands
Freezing/thawing=contract/expand
Types of mass wasting
Scree/Talus Soil creep Landslide Mud and debris flow Slump Rockfalls and avalanches Solifluction
Scree/Talus
Steep rocky slope
Water enters cracks in rock and freezes
Rock breaks apart and falls down
Soil creep
Imperceptible creep of soil downslope
Leaning trees, fences, etc.
Landslide
Rapid movement of soil downslope
Rock is weathered into soil (vegetation)
Mud and debris flow
Soil flows downhill like liquid
Sandy soils are prone
Highway 3A east of Keremeos
Slump
Slab of land breaks away, top layer of soil vegetation remains intact.
Rockfalls/avalanches
Mass of snow/ice that breaks away and slides down mountain slope.
