mass spectroscopy Flashcards
what is a mass spectrometer
a machine that allows atoms and molecules to be measured and compared
first step of mass spectroscopy (vaporisation)
The sample is turned to a gas so atoms and molecules are seperated
second step of mass spectroscopy (ionisation)
A heated filament gives out electrons to pass through the gas, where they knock out other electrons from the atom to form a positive ion
third step of mass spectroscopy (Acceleration)
An electrical field is applied to accelerate the positive ions so they have the same ke
last step of mass spectroscopy (detection)
Ions with the correct mass:charge ratio will be detected. If magnetic field stays constant while while the electrical field is varied, one type of molecule after another will be detected, a complete spectrum will be obtained
