mass spectrometry Flashcards
1
Q
what is mass spectrometry
A
analysing sample of elements in terms of the isotopes they contain and their relative amounts under a vaccuum
2
Q
what is ionisation
A
an elctron gun fires high energy electrons at a sample knocking off an electron forming a positive ion
3
Q
what is acceleration
A
positive ions are accelerated by attraction the negatively charge plate
4
Q
what is deflection
A
ions are deflected by a magnetic field. the strength of the magnetic field deflects them differently.
5
Q
what is detection
A
`the detector consists of a negative plate. the positive ions hit the negative plate causing a potential difference and a tiny current. the size of the current is proportional to the relative abundance.
