mass spectrometer Flashcards
what does the mass spectrometer provide ?
the mass spectrometer provides accurate information about:
- relative isotopic mass (Ar and Mr)
- relative abundance of isotopes
what can mass spectrometry be used for ?
- to identify elements
- to determine relative molecular mass
which peak on a mass spectra is the Molecular ion / parent ion peak? and why ?
the peak that is furthest away
because it is the heaviest so it is the Mr
what are the other peaks on the mass spectra called and where do they come from ?
they are called fragments and they come from fragmentation from the electron gun ionisation.
how do you find the mass of 1 ion ?
Ar divided by 1000 to get kg of 1 mole and then divide by avogadro’s number to get the mass in kg of 1 atom
