Mass Movements Flashcards
Landslide Nature and cause
Nature - Sudden and involve large quantities of rock and sediment, made of coherent block of material that slides over the surface
Cause - Climate, faults, undermining, building, deforestation
Mudflow nature and cause
Nature - Narrow incised channel with a long fluid runout to the beach, sediment is small and wet
Cause - Strong rain causes erosion and/or mobilize loose sediment located on slopes
What are the different types of mass movements
Mudflow, soil creep, debris flow, landslide, slumping, rockfall, lahar, solifluction, earthflow
debris flow nature and cause
Sudden movements usually associated with steeper slopes and large loose materials, more fluid than slides. Caused by rainfall and unstable mass
Lahar nature and cause
Type of mudflow or debris flow composed of pyroclastic material with water, flows down side of a volcano. Cause when volcanic debris losses its internal strength causing slope to collapse / rapid melting of snow and ice / convectional rainfall caused by hot air created by the volcano
rockfall nature and cause
free fall of rock from a cliff face. Caused by climate, favorable geology, weathering, undercutting, earthquake
Soilfluction nature and cause
slow downslope movement of soil due to recurrent freezing and thawing of the ground. Caused by frost creep
Earthflow nature and cause
downslope viscous flow of fine material saturated with water. Caused by excess precipitation, elevated ground water levels, earthquakes, erosion
Soil creep
Damp soil moves very slowly down a slope as the weight of water pushes it forwards. Caused by burrowing agents, tree throw, absorption of water
