Mass movement: Slumping and Sliding Flashcards
1
Q
Mass movement can also be known as
A
Rotational slipping
2
Q
Where does mass movement commonly happen
A
On clay banks of rivers and cliffs
3
Q
What does mass movement involve
A
A large area of land moving down a slope
4
Q
What does mass movement leave behind
A
A curved surface
5
Q
Explain the process of mass movement (4 steps)
A
1) During dry weather, clay contracts and cracks
2) When it rains the water runs into the cracks
3) Eventually the soil becomes saturated with water
4) This weakens the rock and due to the pull of gravity and the weight of the saturated soil, it slips down the slope on its slip plane, leaving behind a curved surface
