Mass Movement Flashcards
Define Mass Movement
Mass movement refers to weathered, loose materials that (regolith) move down the slope under the influence of gravity
Which factors influence mass movement
Human interaction
Deforestation
Water content
Gradient slopes
Heavy Rainfall
What is soil creep
Soil creep occurs when soil moves down a slope at a slow and gentle speed of 1cm per year. This mean that it is the slowest form of Mass movement. We only notice these movements and affects after a few years of clues left on the landscape.
What is a landslide
A landslide is a sudden movement of rock, soil, debris down a slope due to gravity that have been weakened by factors such as rainfall and deforestation and other human activities like road contraction and rails and buildings. These factors cause functions and support causing materials to slide downhill
Types of Mass movements
Mudflow/ bog burst
Avalanches
Soil creep
Earthflow
Rockfall
Rockslide
Slump
Landslide
