Mass and energy balance Flashcards
What is a steady-state?
relevant factors of a process are operating at a constant time rate (equilibrium)
What is unsteady-state?
relevant factors of a process are operating at an unstable state (e.g. storing food in a fridge because the temperature decreases over time)
What are extensive properties?
the value of a property depends on the extent or the size of a system (E.g. length, mass etc. - larger the system, the larger the length and mass)
What are intensive properties?
The property does not depend on the size of a system (e.g. pressure and temperature)
What is the first law of thermodynamics?
The first law of thermodynamics states that energy cannot be created or destroyed. It can only be converted from one form to another
