Education is part of the ideological state apparatus. What does this mean?
IDA is a tool to justify social inequality, which makes us think that inequality is fair and we cannot change.
What does Education promote?
Education promotes ruling class values to make us more compliant.
What does education justify and reproduce?
Class inequality, it does not produce equality of opportunity.

Marx believed these institutions encourage people to accept their lot in life e.g. work,education.
Kept the working class in a state of false class consciousness meaning they accepted their inequalities and believed they were in a unchangeable situation, education system is seen as a key to be transmitting the capitalist Ideology to maintain social control and the dominance of the bourgeoise over the working class.
What does the super structure suggest about society and our life course?
It suggests that the super structure determines your life, as you have no choice, you have to work even if it is a low paying job which keeps the economic base running.
hegemony,what does this mean?
Education system persuades the working class (subordinate group) to accept their values and beliefs.
What does transmitting ideology mean?
The working class being convinced by the education system that capitalism is fair for all individuals.
What is the correspondence principle?
This is when schooling mirrors the world of work in a capitalist society.
Theory of Bowels and Gintis
They argue that education is controlled by capitalists and it’s designed to serve their interests.
Conducted a study in schooling in the USA in the 1970s and found that education linked closely with the world of work, teaching children the skills that capitalists value in their workers (correspondence principle).
What is the hidden curriculum?
It’s a term used to describe the values transmitted unofficially in a school through the ways teachers treat different groups of students and staff.
What is cultural capital- Bourdieu
Cultural capital is the middle class knowledge, attitude and values that are passed to their children, this helps them to achieve in education.
