What is criminogenic capitalism?
Crime is inevitable in capitalism because capitalism is criminogenic. It’s nature causes crime.
Working class crime: capitalism based on exploration of the working class for profit. As a result:
Poverty means crime only way some can survive.
Crime only way of obtaining goods encouraged by capitalist advertising
Alienation causes frustration leading to violence and vandalism.
Ruling class crime: capitalism is competition as profit motive encourages greed. This encourages capitalists to commit corporate crimes such as tax evasion.
What is the traditional Marxists theory?
Traditional Marxism see capitalist society as divided into the ruling class who own the means of production and the working class whose labour capitalists exploit for profit. Structural theory. Social institutions function is to serve the ruling class. The structure of capitalism explains crime.
What does chambliss argue about the state and law making?
Marxists see it as serving the interests of the capitalist class.
Chambliss argues laws to protect private property are bias of the capitalist economy.
The ruling class also have the power to prevent the introduction of laws harmful to their interests.
Few laws challenge the unequal distribution of wealth.
