Conflict theory
See society as being made up of two or more groups with competing or incompatible interests
Determinism
An individuals actions and life course is determined by external forces
Capitalism
An economic system based on market competition, and private ownership
Class
A group of people within a society who posses the same socioeconomic status
Bourgeoisie
ruling class who owns the means of production and employ and exploit the proletariat
Proletariat
Working class who are employed and exploited by bourgeoisie
Ideology
A set of ideas and belies that are dominant in society
False consciousness
A way of thinking that prevents a person from perceiving the nature of their social and economic situation
Ideological state apparatus
How the bourgeoisie maintain power and prepared working-class pupils to accept a life of exploitation
Habitus
The norms, values, attitudes and behaviours of a particular social group
Cultural capital
The social assets of a person that promote social mobility
Hidden curriculum
The unwritten/unofficial values that students learn in school
Conformity
Compliance with standards, rules or laws
