Q

education reproduces and reinforces class inequality (willis)

A
  • 12 working lads who formed a counter-school sub cultural group
  • they opposed the norms and vlaues
  • these groups of boys felt superior to the more conformist pupils who were labelled as ‘ear oles’
  • they shoed little interest in academic work and instead amused themselves as best as they could through various forms of deviant behaviour in which they called ‘having a laff’
  • tried to identity with adults through drinking, smoking and sexist and racist attitudes
  • academic work had no values for them and saw manual labour as being superior to mental work
  • the counter school culture helped prepare the boys for the boredom and monotony of the work they were to do later in life
  • adopted similar distraction techniques
  • educate creates inequality to these lads as they are from working manual classes who would follow in the footsteps of their fathers who were also manual labourers making them underachieve in school

Q

reproduces class inequality by reinforcing and rewarding the culture of the middle and upper classes (bourdieu)

A
  • the concept of cultural capital is very useful to understand how different social groups may experience education due to the extent to which they possess cultural capital
  • defined as the culture passed down, reproduced from generation to generation which leads to social reproduction and advantages for the middle class
  • it is the middle class who possess more cultural capital which is valued by the education system which is therefore disadvantageous to other social groups
  • the education system recognises and reward certain types of cultural background and behaviour; teachers privilege certain types of knowledge among pupils who have more cultural capital which leads them to more academic success
  • measuring cultural capital:
    • cultural participation
    • reading habits
    • participation
  • parents encourage their children and help them to get activities that increase their cultural capita

Q

to teach explicable skills and prepare students for the culture of the capitalist workplace (Bowles and gintis)

A
  • correspondence principle
  • this is an essential concept as it is important for social reproduction which is the reproduction of new generations of workers appropriately schooled to accept their roles in cautaist society
  • they experience the same scenarios within school that they will experience later in the workplace
  • education is not meritocratic as the education system avoids working classes threatening social stably by maskeg them believe that they have an equal chance
  • meritocracy is a myth
  • society is based on hierarchies, teachers give orders, pupils are expected to obey, etc…. just like in the workplace
  • rewards and sanctions
  • workers are motivated by external rewards such as pay
  • the correspondence principle reproduces labour work from one generation to the other
  • the education system is organised to prepare students for future roles in capitalist society as capitalist society is unequal
  • one way of avoiding the working class threatening social stability is to promote the belief that inequality id justified

Q

why is compulsory education too long according to Bowles and gintis

A
  • it takes time to get children used to accepting boredom and doing as they are told
  • it helps capitalists to have more skilled workers
