Role & Function 1: Education reproduces and reinforces class inequality

Show that the boys were anti-school, a form of rebellion, not passive.
Counter school culture - These boys used distractions away from education, looked only to their future in factory labour, no purpose of education
Similarly, shop floor culture distracts from the boredom of the workplace but still does the work, acting laddish when the owner is away with lads but gets the work done when the owner is present.
Role & Function 2:
Reproduces class inequalities by reinforcing and rewarding the culture of the middle and upper classes

Economic, social and cultural capital
Culture capital defied as culture passed down, reproduced from generation to generation.
Leads to social reproduction and advantages for the middle classes, the middle class that possesses more cultural capital.
Role & Function 3:
Is to legitimate class inequality and allows the ruling class to control the masses through ideological control - the culture of capitalism is reinforced as “typical”

Ideological class consciousness - keeping those in lower class in the positions within the capitalist society
Role & Function 4:
To teach exploitable skills and prepare students for the culture of the capitalist workplace
Bowles and Gintis
Close correspondence between the social relationships in the classroom.
Essential for social reproduction
School and workplace: based on hierarchies, teachers giving order, pupils are expected to obey
