-coincided with the expansion of employment and affluence after ww2
-teddy boys were made up of men who had lost out in education and employment
-would hang out in cafes and wore Edwardian style jackets,suede shoes and bootlace ties
-the jackets were subversions of the upper class style to show contempt for the class system
