The view that humans have material needs i.e. food, clothes etc
What is class conscienceness?
a persons awareness or beliefs about their class or social position

institutions, groups and values working together to keep society stable and in order

ideology: a word to describe a set of ideas and beliefs that are dominant in society and are used to justify the power and privilege of the ruling class
alienation: workers don’t get to see their final products of labour

People not aware of their exploitation in society
positives of Marxism
- explains conflict and change
- explains the uneven distribution of power and wealth in society
disadvantages of Marxism
- simplistic, class structure more complex today
- doesn’t look into gender, ethnicity etc

Explain hegemony and whos theory is it
Dominant culture maintains its dominant position

How does the ruling class maintain it’s power via hegemony?
Coercion - army, police, prison and courts to forces classes to accept it’s rule
Consent (hegemony) - ideas and values to persuade lower classes
Why does Gramsci say the ruling classes hegemony is never complete?
- Ruling class is a minority
- Proletariat having dual consciousness
what’s dual consciousness
working class aware of exploitation but don’t do anything to change it
what is counter hegemony
= overthrowing capitalism

- Economic = activities which involve producing something/meeting a need
- Political = comprising all forms of organization
- ideological = all ways people see themselves and their world
