What is the engagement period?
An average of 1 year period, seen as a trial before mariage and a period to plan the wedding. Couples discuss the following (in private or in mariage classes):
- money
- intimacy
- in laws
- friends
- recreational pursuits
- sexual expression
- independence
- children
Three types of mariage: common law
- verbal agreement
- private
- more impulsive and less planned
- unity and fidelity based on the desires of the couple (1st 12 months)
- independence- no strings attached

- legal contract
- public to society
- governed by marriage laws
- unity and fidelity based on the desires of the couple
- independent except for legal ties that can be dissolved
Three types of marriage: Sacramental
- verbal, legal and a covenant of love to live as husband and wife as a sign of God’s love.
- public to society and the christian community.
- sacred, permanent bond until death
- unity and fidelity based on the covenant of marriage, faith and the support of the faith marriage
- personal freedom with a commitment to grow together and support each other’s individual growth.
