What does Cott say about marriage?
Marriage is portrayed as equal and contractual, where the women still have a choice, a choice to which man to submit to. they are not allowed to choose within the marriage though (no property and everything), nor are they allowed to not participate in this system.
What does Coquette say about Marriage?
Marriage vs friendship, where marriage is viewed as hierarchical, restraining, and friendship is viewed as freeing and horizontal. there is a “Free market” of friendship.
What does GDM say about marriage?
Black marriage with RIder, where the grief over the wife is not acknowledged or inconceivable.
What does My Contraband say about Marriage?
Black marriage as fragile (easily taken over and violated, broken w/o consequences).. yet it is also a symbol of freedom and equality. “no drop of black blood”.
