Marriage Flashcards
What are 5 reasons why Christians should marry?
It is a sacrament (Roman Catholics)
It provides a stable background in which to have children
It is a god given gift (God created marriage when he created Eve for Adam)
The only suitable environment for sex (i.e. it prevents promiscuity)
What did St Paul say about marriage?
He said we shouldn’t marry because we should devote our time to God. However, he believed that if we were unable to hold ourselves back from worldly pleasures then we should.
What do Fundamentalist/Conservative Christians think about homosexual marriage?
They would argue that is wrong and it is a son as the Bible states that those who are homosexual will go to hell. They also believe it is wrong because one is unable to reproduce through gay marriage which is one of the important aspects of a marriage.
2 quotes against homosexuality in the Bible
“Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders…will inherit the kingdom of God”(Corinthians)
“to lie with a man as to lie with a woman is an abomination” (Leviticus)
What is promiscuity?
When a person has multiple sexual partners
What do Christians think of promiscuity and why?
They think it is wrong as it is a sin because in the Bible God says “Do not commit adultery”(Deuteronomy). Therefore, by being promiscuous, Christians believe one is committing adultery and therefore going against God’s will.
What are the roles of males and females in a family according to the Bible?
Males are the workers; they earn money for their family
Females’ role is to have a children and more of a domestic role according to Genesis. However, some areas suggest women as having a job as well.
What is divorce?
It is the dissolution of a marriage.
What is marriage?
A service in which a man and woman are legally joined together
What do Christians think of divorce?
They are against it. This is because God joined those two people for a reason and by divorcing they are ruining his plan.
Some Fundamentalists think that it is acceptable if one of the members of the couple has committed adultery against the other: “anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness”(Matthew)
Roman Catholics see marriage as a sacrament and these shouldn’t be undone. It means you are not accepting God’s grace.
It means couples have broken their marriage vows. “till death do us part”
Some might believe that it is the most loving thing to do and so it is perfectly acceptable to divorce. (Love one another as I have loved you”(John))
What do Christians think of remarriage?
Roman Catholics don’t believe in divorce therefore to them remarriage is adultery and so is wrong. However, if the spouse has died then they are allowed to remarry. This is because God has brought the marriage to an end by taking the life of one of the members of the couple.
Church of England is for remarriage. However, a priest can refuse to conduct the marriage of an already divorced person.
What does Jesus think about divorce?
He is against divorce because it is adultery but if one of the parters has committed adultery against the other then it is perfectly acceptable to divorce.
“Anyone who divorces his wife and marries a woman commits adultery against her”(Mark)
“anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness”(Matthew)
