Nothing about these working conditions is appealing, the Jews have extremely small spaces to work in with extremely poor hygiene all day long for long hours on end.

Orwell makes sure that the soldiers skin colours stand out to the reader, he wants the reader to see how their skin contrasts with the white europeans skin by using cruel language to describe them in such a disrespectful way.

‘Squashed’ highlights how small these uniforms are, the europeans didn’t even have the decency to give the soldiers uniforms which fit when working in scorching heats for long hours, the complete disrespect for the Senegalese soldiers is appalling.
