What is Colonialism/Imperialism?
When a country has no authority as an other country/settlers have over thrown it.
What are the 4 main groups of people in Marrakech?
The Poor, Jews, Women and Senegalese Soldiers.
“wrapped in a piece of rag”
Word Choice
Poor literally have nothing, the severity of poverty in Marrakech is shocking, people aren’t even able to afford the most basic items, they simply have nothing to treat the body with.
“No gravestone, no name, no identifying mark of any kind”
Repetition
‘No’ repeated draws the readers attention to how the poor’s live are seen as worthless, it is as if they have no value or importance.
“sort of quite amazement,”
Word Choice
The workers attitude towards seeing Orwell feed a gazelle indicates how surprised he is at seeing perfectly good food being given to an animal.
“Jews were only allowed to own land in certain restricted areas”
Imagery
Reference to Nazi is used here as it is portrayed as the Jews being controlled and having no freedom linking to WW2 and the Anti-Semitic behaviour towards the Jews.
“dark fly-infested booths”
Word Choice/Imagery
Nothing about these working conditions is appealing, the Jews have extremely small spaces to work in with extremely poor hygiene all day long for long hours on end.
“came crawling out, groping the air”
Word Choice
The Jews desperation is presented here, they clearly crave a luxury item like a cigarette so much that they would do anything for one.
“an old woman following on foot,”
Symbolism
Colonialism is highlighted here as the views which have been brought to Marrakech are male dominated, the women are seen as worthless once they have had children and brought them up, they are seen as worthless and treated as slaves.
“poor old earth-coloured bodies,”
Imagery
The old women are compared to looking like dirt, this is completely disrespectful and no one should be treated so poorly as if they are invisible, due to a male dominated culture it has become normal to treat women as if they aren’t equal.
“the blackest Negroes in Africa,”
Word Choice
Orwell makes sure that the soldiers skin colours stand out to the reader, he wants the reader to see how their skin contrasts with the white europeans skin by using cruel language to describe them in such a disrespectful way.
“their feet squashed into boots”
Word Choice
‘Squashed’ highlights how small these uniforms are, the europeans didn’t even have the decency to give the soldiers uniforms which fit when working in scorching heats for long hours, the complete disrespect for the Senegalese soldiers is appalling.
