Calming of the storm (Mark 4:35-41)

A
  • Jesus left the crowd to go to the other side of the lake with the disciples
  • A storm arose, and Jesus was in the stern sleeping on a cushion
  • The disciples said, ‘Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?’
  • He got up and said to the waves ‘Quiet,be still.’ then the storm calmed
  • Jesus asked the disciples, ‘Why are you afraid, do you still have no faith?’
  • The disciples were frightened and asked each other ‘Who is this, even the wind and waves obey him!’

Caesarea Phillipi (Mark 8:27-33)

  • Jesus asked the disciples ‘Who do people say that I am?’
  • They replied, ‘Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.’
  • Jesus asked Peter ‘Who do you say that I am?’
  • Peter answered, ‘You are the Messiah.’ and Jesus warned them to keep it a secret (Messianic Secret)

The Transfiguration (Mark 9:2-8)

  • Jesus led Peter, James and John up a high mountain
  • Jesus clothes went bright white, brighter than anyone could bleach them
  • Elijah and Moses appeared for them, Moses representing the laws and Elijah the Prophets
  • Peter said to Jesus ‘Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah’
  • A voice came down from heaven ‘This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!’
  • Suddenly they looked around to find only Jesus with them

Entry into Jerusalem (Mark 11:1-11)

  • On approaching Jerusalem, Jesus sent two disciples to fetch a colt, and told them to clarify that Jesus asked for this if anyone asks
  • Jesus entered on the colt, and many of the crowd laid down there cloaks and waved palm branches, exclaiming ‘Hosanna!’

Arranging the betrayal (Mark 14:1-2; 10-11)

  • Chief priests and the teachers of the law were scheming to arrest and kill Jesus, making sure to avoid a riot by doing it after the Passover festival
  • Judas, one of the disciples, went to the chief priests to betray Jesus, and they promised him 30 pieces of silver

  • A woman came in with an alabaster jar into the home Jesus was in and poured it over his head
  • The people were around were furious, claiming it was worth ‘More than a years wages’ and they rebuked her harshly
  • Jesus said to leave her alone, as she did what she could and said that what she had done will be told in the gospel in memory of her

The Last Supper

A

-Jesus sent two disciples into the city to meet a man carrying a jar of water, so they may get to the room for the Passover
-While they were at the table, Jesus said ‘Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me—one who is eating with me.’
-The disciples all were asking ‘Surely not I?’
‘It is one of the Twelve,’ he replied, ‘one who dips bread into the bowl with me’ And goes onto say it would be better if they weren’t even born

Jesus in Gethsemane (Mark 14:32-42)

  • Jesus and the disciples went to Gethsemane, and told the disciples to sit while he prayed
  • Jesus begged his father to change his fate of completing his mission, saying ‘Everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.’
  • Jesus got back to the disciples and said to Peter ‘Could you not stay awake for one hour?’ and told them to watch and pray
  • The second and third time Jesus returned they fell asleep and Jesus told them to awaken as his betrayer was coming

Jesus’ Arrest (Mark 14:43-52)

  • Judas came with a crowd of guards with weapons and said that he will kiss the one to seize on the cheek
  • He went over to Jesus and kissed him, and the guards seized him
  • One standing with Jesus cut a servant of the high priests ear off
  • ‘Am I leading a rebellion,’ said Jesus, ‘that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled’
  • Everyone fled, including a naked young man who was seen running

Jesus’ trial before the Sanhedrin (Mark 14:53-65)

  • They asked him ‘Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?’
  • Jesus replied ‘I am’ and they confirmed to sentence him to death, then some struck and beat him.

Jesus’ trial before Pilate (Mark 15:1-20)

  • Pilate asked Jesus ‘Are you the king of the Jews?’
  • Jesus replied ‘You have said so.’
  • Pilate asked the crowd to release Jesus or Barabbas, and they chose Barabbas
  • He also asked what they want him to do with Jesus, and they exclaimed ‘Crucify him!’
  • Although Pilate did not believe this as right, he had Jesus sent to be crucified
  • The guards mocked him, gave him a purple robe and a crown of thorns, shouting ‘All hail the king of the Jews!’

Jesus’ Resurrection (Mark 16:1-8)

  • ‘When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus’ body’
  • They saw that the stone had been rolled away, and found a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side
  • He said ‘Don’t be alarmed’ and told them that Jesus had risen and told them that he is going ahead to Galilee
  • They fled the tomb and said nothing to anyone because they were afraid

  • Jesus appeared to the 11 and rebuked them for their lack of faith
  • He said to them ‘Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”

-In front of the disciples, Jesus ascended into heaven and the disciples went and preached everywhere

The feeding of the five thousand (Mark 6:30-44)

  • Jesus began teaching a crowd waiting when Jesus landed and took pity on them and began teaching
  • He told the disciples to give them something to eat
  • They exclaimed ‘That would take more than a half years wages!’
  • Jesus found out that between them they had five loaves of bread and two fish, gave thanks, and told the disciples to distribute it
  • Afterwards, everyone was full, and the disciples collected twelve baskets full of leftovers

  • Jesus was teaching in a crowded house, when some men came with a paralyzed man
  • They brought him up to the roof and lowered him down before Jesus
  • Jesus said to the man ‘Son, your sins are forgiven’
  • Jesus questioned why the teachers of the law were thinking badly, and told the man to pick up his mat and go home
  • The man did so, and everyone was amazed, saying ‘We have never seen anything like this!’

  • Jesus went into the synagogue, seeing this man
  • Jesus said to the crowd ‘Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?’
  • They didn’t reply. so he told the man to put his hand out and it was healed
  • The pharisees went out and began to plot to kill Jesus

Jesus in the temple court (Mark 11:15-18)

  • Jesus saw those buying and selling in the temple courts, and overturned all of the tables, claiming that they have made it a ‘den of robbers’
  • The chief priests planned how to kill him because the crowd was amazed at his teaching

  • Some Pharisees and Herodians went up to Jesus, asking if it was right to pay tax to Caesar
  • Jesus saw their trap, and said ‘Give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.’ and they were amazed

The call of the Levi/ Eating with sinners (Mark 2:13-17)

  • Pharisees saw Jesus eating with tax collectors and sinners and asked why he does this
  • Jesus replied ‘It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners’

  • A man came to Jesus and begged to be healed
  • Jesus said ‘Be clean!’ and he was clean
  • He told the man to go and show the priest

The Greek womans daughter (Mark 7:24-30)

  • A greek woman came to a house that Jesus was in, wishing for her daughter to be cleared of an impure spirit
  • Jesus said ‘For it is not right to take the childrens bread and toss it to the dogs’
  • She replied ‘Even the dogs under the table eat the childrens crumbs’
  • He said for such a reply, her daughter has been cleared of the demon

The woman with a haemorrhage (Mark 5:25-34)

  • A woman who had been bleeding for twelve years touched Jesus’ cloak when he went past
  • Jesus asked the crowd ‘Who touched my clothes?’
  • The women confessed, and he said ‘Daughter, your faith has healed you, Go in peace and be free from your suffering’

Jairus’ daughter (Mark 5:21-24; 35-43)

  • Jairus came to ask Jesus for help as his daughter was dying
  • Jesus was too late, as the daughter had died
  • Once he got there, and said ‘The child is not dead but asleep’
  • He said ‘Little girl, I say to you, get up!’ and she stood up and began to walk around, and they were amazed

  • Jesus and his disciples were leaving Jericho, when a man came and said ‘Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!’
  • Jesus healed the man, saying ‘Your faith has healed you’, he immediately was healed, and followed Jesus

  • Jesus walked by the sea of Galilee, and saw Peter and Andrew
  • He told them to follow him, and said that he will teach them how to fish for people
  • Further on, he saw James and John and called for them, and they came with him

The mission of the twelve (Mark 6:7-13)

  • Jesus said to the disciples ‘Take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in your belts. Wear sandals but not an extra shirt. Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town. And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, leave that place and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.’
  • They went out and performed exorcisms,teachings and healings

  • He denied this and swore that he didn’t know Jesus 3 times

-Jesus taught that those who will hear the word of God and will accept it, will produce a crop with great yield

-Jesus told the disciples that they had to be prepared to take up their cross, and said that they would have eternal life if they are prepared to give it up for Jesus and will be accepted by God

  • A rich man came to Jesus, asking what needed to be done to have eternal life
  • Jesus recited the commandments, and told him to give away his wealth and said that he will have ‘treasure in heaven’
  • He went away sad for he had great wealth

-Jesus taught that wealth is not what will get one into heaven, and should aim to give up wealth for God

The widow at the treasury (Mark 12:41-44)

A
  • Jesus was watching people deposit into the treasury at the temple
  • Rich men placed large amounts, whereas a widow came and put in two copper coins
  • Jesus called the disciples and said that the widow put in more than all of the others, as the rich gave out of their wealth, but the women gave what she had to live on
