Marking Out Flashcards
Marking gauge
Used a pin at an adjustable length to scratch a line parallel to a surface
Cutting gauge
Uses a blade at an adjustable length from a block to cut a line through the wood grain, this allows for the line to be cut without splintering the grain.
Mortice gauge
Has two pins at an adjustable distance used to score two parallel lines to mark for a mortice cut to be made. Lines are then drawn in with pencil for better visibility
Odd leg callipers
Has one leg that is curved called a locating lug and an adjustable point on the other, also used for scoring parallel lines but mainly on metal
Internal calliper
Used for measuring the inside of spaces such as in a tube and can then be measured using a ruler
External calliper
Has curved arms to reach round large objects or curves, then is compared to a ruler to find the measurements
Set square
Plastic triangles used to mark 30, 45 and 60 degrees
Try square
Has a brass face, with a perpendicular steel “blade” that is used to mark a line perpendicular to the surface
Mitre square
Used for lines 45 degrees from a surface usually for mitre joints
Engineers square
Try square for metal, most metal working tools are made from metal and wood tools from wood
Micrometer
A high precision measuring tool used by engineers, each revolution of the spindle (handle) moves the measuring faces 0.5mm closer together
Vernier callipers
Two jaws to measure internal and external faces with a rod to measure depth, has multiple measurements which are different magnitudes of accuracy. Electrical callipers show the exact measurement
Densitometer
Made for measuring the density of materials by using a probe to measure hardness and other factors
Jig
Jig holds a part in place to allow precise repetition of an action eg. Drilling a hole in the same place on each bit of wood. This speeds up the manufacturing process, but can cost more
Go no gauges
Is used as a test for tolerance but only the upper limit, eg. Making sure that a log is not too big to fit in the saw mill when cutting
