Principles of uniformitarianism

Key assumptions of Uniformitarianism:
• Controlling environmental factors are known
• Ecological affinities remain constant
• Populations (past/present) are/were in equilibrium
• Modern analogues exist for past species/environs
• Process of fossilisation is known (taphonomy)
• No contamination or differential preservation
• Fossil species can be identified
