Mark's Gospel - Stories Simplified Flashcards
The Baptism and Temptation of Jesus
- Not long afterwards Jesus came from Nazareth in the province of Galilee, and was baptised by John in the Jordan.
- Came up out of the water
- Saw heaven opening and the spirit coming down on him like a dove
- A voice from heaven said: “You are my own dear son. I am pleased with you.”
- At once the spirit made him go into the desert, where he stayed 40 days, being tempted by Satan.
- Wild animals were there also, but angels came and helped him.
A man with an evil spirit
- Jesus and his disciples went to Capernaum
- On the next Sabbath he went to the synagogue and began to teach
- The people were amazed = His teachings were different than the Pharisees, he taught with authority
- Just then a man with an evil spirit entered and screamed
- “What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Are you here to destroy us? I know who you are - you are God’s holy messenger!
- Jesus ordered the spirit, “Be quiet, and come out of the man!”
- The evil spirit shook the man hard, gave a loud scream and came out of him
- The people were amazed and said to one another, “What is this? Is it some kind of new teaching? This man has authority to give orders to the evil spirits, and they obey him!”
- The news about Jesus spread quickly everywhere in the province of Galilee
Jesus heals a man (The man with a dreaded skin disease)
- A man suffering from a dreaded skin disease came to Jesus, knelt down and begged him for help
- “If you want to,” he said, “you can make me clean.”
- Jesus was filled with pity, and stretched out his hand and touched him
- “I do want to,” he answered. “Be clean!”
- At once the disease left the man
- Jesus spoke sternly to him and sent him away after saying: “Listen, don’t tell anyone about this. But go straight to the priest and let him examine you; then in order to prove to everyone that you are cured, offer the sacrifice that Moses ordered.”
- But the man went away and began to spread the news everywhere.
- Indeed, he talked so much that Jesus could not go into a town publicly.
- Instead, he stayed out in lonely places, and people came to him from everywhere.
Jesus Heals a Paralysed Man
- A few days later Jesus went back to Capernaum and news spread that he was home.
- So many people came together that there was no room left, not even out in front of the door.
- Jesus was preaching the message to them when four men arrived, carrying a paralysed man to Jesus.
- Because of the crowd, however, they could not get the man to him. So they made a hole in the roof right above where Jesus was.
- When they had made an opening, they let the man down, lying on his mat. Seeing how much faith they had, Jesus said to the paralysed man, “My son, your sins are forgiven.” Some teachers of the law who were sitting there thought to themselves,
- “How does he dare to talk like this? This is blasphemy! God is the only one who can forgive sins!”
- At once Jesus knew what they were thinking
- “Why do you think such things?” Is it easier to say to this paralysed man, ‘your sins are forgiven’ or to say, ‘Get up, pick up your mat, and walk’ ? I will prove to you, then, that the son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.”
- “I tell you, get up, pick up your mat and go home!” While they all watched, the man got up, picked up his mat, and hurried away. They were all completely amazed and praised God ,saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”
Jesus sends out the Twelve Disciples (The mission of the Twelve, Mark 6: 7-13)
- Then Jesus went to the villages round there
- Teaching the people
- He called the twelve together and sent them out two by two
- He gave them authority over evil spirits
- “Don’t take anything with you on your journey except a stick - no bread, no beggar’s bag, no money in your pockets. Wear sandals, but don’t carry an extra shirt.” “Wherever you are welcomed, stay in the same house until you leave that place. If you come to a town where people do not welcome you or will not listen to you, leave it and shake the dust off your feet. That will be a warning to them!”
- so they went out and preached that people should turn away from their sins. They drove out many demons, and rubbed olive oil on many sick people and healed them.
Jesus calls Levi
- Jesus went back again to the shore of Galilee
- A crowd came and he started teaching them
- As he walked along he saw a tax collector, Levi son of Alphaeus, sitting in his office.
- Jesus said to him, “Follow me.” Levi got up and followed him.
- Later on Jesus was having a meal in Levi’s house
- A large number of tax collectors and other outcasts were following Jesus, and many of them joined him and his disciples at the table.
- some teachers of the Law, who were Pharisees, saw that Jesus was eating with these outcasts and tax collectors, so they asked his disciples.
- “Why does he eat with such people?”
- Jesus heard them and answered, “People who are well do not need a doctor, but only those who are sick. I have not come to call respectable people, but outcasts.”
The man with a Paralysed hand
- Then Jesus went back to the synagogue were there was a man with a paralysed hand.
- Some people were there who wanted to accuse Jesus of doing wrong; so they watched him closely to see whether he would heal the man on the sabbath.
- Jesus said to the man “Come up here to the front.”
- “What does our Law allow us to do on the sabbath? To help or to harm? To save someone’s life or to destroy it?
- But they did not say a thing. Jesus was angry as he looked round at them, but at the same time he felt sorry for them, because they were so stubborn and wrong.
- Then he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and it became well again.
- So the Pharisees left the synagogue and met at once with some members of Herod’s party, and they made plans to kill Jesus.
Jesus Chooses the Twelve Apostles
- Then Jesus went up a hill and called to himself the men he wanted. They came to him, and he chose twelve, whom he named apostles.
- “I have chosen you to be with me,” he told them. “I will also send you out to preach and you will have authority to drive out demons.”
- These are the twelve he chose:
Simon (Jesus gave him the name Peter) James and his brother John, the sons of Zebedee (Jesus gave them the name Boanerges, which means 'Men of Thunder') Andrew Philip Bartholomew Matthew Thomas James son of Alphaeus Thaddaeus Simon the Patriot Judas Iscariot
The Parable of Sower
- Again Jesus began to teach beside lake Galilee.
- The crowd that gathered round him was so large that he got into a boat and sat in it. The boat was out in the water, and the crowd stood on the shore at the water’s edge.
- He used parables to teach them many things, saying to them:
- Listen! Once there was a man who went out to sow corn. As he scattered the seed in the field, some of it fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some of it fell on rocky ground, where there was little soil. The seeds soon sprouted, because the soil wasn’t deep. Then, when the sun came up, it burnt the young plants; and because the roots had not grown deep enough, the plants soon dried up. Some of the seed fell among thorn bushes, which grew up and choked the plants, and they didn’t produce any corn. But some seeds fell in good soil, and the plants sprouted, grew, and produced corn: some had thirty grains, others sixty, and others a hundred.” And Jesus concluded, “Listen, then, if you have ears!”
A Lamp under a bowl
- Jesus continued, “Does anyone ever bring in a lamp and put it under a bowl or under the bed? Doesn’t he put it on the lampstand? Whatever is hidden away will be brought out into the open, and whatever is covered up will be uncovered. Listen, then, if you have ears!”
- He also said to them, “Pay attention to what you hear! The same rules you use to judge others will be used by God to judge you - but with even greater severity. Those who have something will be given more, and those who have nothing will have taken away from them even the little they have.”
The Parable of the Growing Seed
• Jesus went on to say, “The Kingdom of God is like this. A man scatters seed in his field. He sleeps at night, is up and about during the day, and all the while the seeds are sprouting and growing. Yet he does not know how it happens. The soil itself makes the plants grow and bear fruit; first the tender stalk appears, then the ear, and finally the ear full of corn. When the corn is ripe, the man starts cutting it with his sickle, because harvest time has come.
Jesus Calms a Storm
- On the evening of that same day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let us go across to the other side of the lake.”
- So they left the crowd; the disciples got into the boat in which Jesus was already sitting, and they took him with them. Other boats were there too. Suddenly a strong wind blew up, and the waves began to spill over into the boat, so that it was about to fill with water. Jesus was in the back of the boat, sleeping with his head on a pillow. The disciples woke him up and said, “Teacher, don’t you care that we are about to die?”
- Jesus stood up and commanded the wind, “Be quiet!” and he said to the waves, “Be still!” The wind died down, and there was a great calm. Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Why are you frightened? Have you still no faith?”
- But they were terribly afraid and said to one another, “who is this man? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”
Jairus’ Daughter and the Woman who Touched Jesus’ Cloak
- Jesus went back across to the other side of the lake.
- There at the lakeside a large crowd gathered round him. Jairus, an official of the local synagogue, arrived, and when he saw Jesus, he threw himself down at his feet and begged him earnestly,
- “My little daughter is very ill. Please come and place your hands on her, so that she will get well and live!”
- Then Jesus started off with him. So many people were going along with Jesus that they were crowding him from every side.
- There was a woman who had suffered terribly from severe bleeding for twelve years, even though she had been treated by many doctors. She had spent all her money, but instead of getting better she got worse all the time.
- She had heard about Jesus, so she came in the crowd behind him, saying to herself, “If I just touch his clothes, I will get well.”
- She touched his cloak, and her bleeding stopped at once; and she had the feeling inside herself that she was healed of her trouble.
- At once Jesus knew that power had gone out of him, so he turned round in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?” His disciples answered, “You see how the people are crowding you; why do you ask who touched you?”
- But Jesus kept looking round to see who had done it. The woman realised what had happened to her, so she came, trembling with fear, knelt at his feet, and told him the whole truth.
- Jesus said to her, “My daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your trouble.” While Jesus was saying this, some messengers came from Jairus’ house and told him, “Your daughter has died. Why bother the Teacher any longer?”
- Jesus paid no attention to what they said, but told him, “Don’t be afraid, only believe.” Then he did not let anyone else go on with him except Peter and James and his brother John.
- They arrived at Jairus’ house, where Jesus saw the confusion and heard all the loud crying and wailing. He went in and said to them, “Why all this confusion? Why are you crying? The child is not dead - she is only sleeping!”
- They laughed at him, so he put them all out, took the child’s father and mother and his three disciples, and went into the room where the child was lying. He took her by the hand and said to her, “Talitha, koum,” which means, “Little girl, I tell you to get up!” She got up at once and started walking around. (She was twelve years old). When this happened, they were completely amazed. But Jesus gave them strict orders not to tell anyone, and he said, :
- “Give her something to eat.”
Jesus is Rejected at Nazareth
- Jesus left that place and went back to his home town, followed by his disciples.
- On the sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue.
- Many people were there; and when they heard him, they were all amazed.
- “Where did he get all this?” they asked. “What wisdom is this that has been given him? How does he perform miracles? Isn’t he the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon? Aren’t his sisters living here?”
- And so they rejected him
- Jesus said to them, “Prophets are respected everywhere except in their home town and by their relatives and their family.”
- He was not able to perform any miracles there, except that he placed his hands on a few sick people and healed them. He was greatly surprised, because the people did not have faith.
Jesus feeds a Great Crowd (Feeding of the five thousand)
- The apostles returned and met with Jesus, and told him all they had done and taught.
- There were so many people coming and going that Jesus and his disciples didn’t even have time to eat. So he said to them, “Let us go off by ourselves to some place where we will be alone and you can rest for a while.” So they started out in a boat by themselves for a lonely place.
- Many people, however, saw them leave and knew at once who they were; so they went from all the towns and ran ahead by land and arrived at the place ahead of Jesus and his disciples. When Jesus got out of the boat, he saw this large crowd, and his heart was filled with pity for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd.
- So he began to teach them many things. When it was getting late, his disciples came to him and said, “It is already very late, and this is a lonely place. Send the people away, and let them go to the nearby farms and villages in order to buy themselves something to eat.”
- “You yourselves give them something to eat,” Jesus answered. They asked “Do you want us to go and spend two hundred silver coins on bread in order to feed them?” So Jesus asked them, “How much bread have you got? Go and see.”
- When they found out, they told him, “Five loaves and also two fish.” Jesus then told his disciples to make all the people divide into groups and sit down on the green grass. So the sat down in rows, in groups of a hundred and groups of fifty.
- Then Jesus took the five loaves and the two fish, looked up to heaven, and gave thanks to God. He broke the loaves and gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided the two fish among them all. Everyone ate and had enough. Then the disciples took up twelve baskets full of what was left of the bread and the fish.
- The number of men who were fed was 5,000.
