Annual Jewish festival celebrating the time when Jews escaped slavery in Egypt
Miracle
An event that cannot be explained by science
Nature miracle
A miracle which affects the environment
Compassion
To care for someone else and try to understand their suffering
Symbolism
To communicate an idea using images and signs but not words
Blasphemy
To claim to be God or use God’s name in vain
Pharisees
Jewish leaders at the time of Jesus. They had very strict rules for how they believed Jews should act in order to please God, however Jews disagreed with their rules
Sabbath
Day of rest for Jews. Strict rules about what was not allowed to be done
Temple
Place of worship in Jerusalem at the time of Jesus
Taxes
Fee that has to be paid to the government e.g income tax
Prayer
Communicating with God
Messiah
Hebrew term for Saviour
Transfiguration
When Peter, James and John saw a vision of Jesus in heaven and from then on had faith that he was the Messiah
Spiritually unclean
A term used by the 1st century Jews to describe those who have broken certain laws in scripture and were not righteous in God’s sight
Gethsemane
Garden just outside of Jerusalem, where Jesus goes to pray after the Last Supper
Sanhedrin
Jewish council and court in first century Israel
