Chief Officer
He is responsible for the upkeep of the life saving appliances and fire fighting equipment
Third Officer
He is a junior deck hand. He assists the bosun in all deck works.
Ordinary Seaman
He assists the duty engineer and performs whatever assigned tasks by the 2/E.
Oiler
He supervises all the work appertaining to the engine room.
Chief Engineer
He keeps the middle and afternoon watches and in charge of the upkeep of the auxiliary engine
Third Engineer
in general, it is responsible for the navigation of the ship when at sea and this includes keeping a continuous look-out in all weathers
Deck Department
the owner’s representative and primarily responsible for the safe navigation of the ship, care and delivery of the cargo and the life and safety of all on board
Master
responsible for navigation and bridge equipment and, at sea, keeps the middle and afternoon watches
Second Officer
responsible for all deck works which include ship maintenance, repair of deck equipment, and assisting the OOW in cargo work
Boatswain (Bosun)
A senior deckhand who assists the bosun in supervising lower ratings in routine activities on port and underway
Able Bodied Seaman (AB)
engaged only on tankers for operating, discharging, loading, ballasting and attending to cargo pumps
Pumpman
the department responsible for constant watch at sea on the engines, lubrication, pressures, fuel supply, auxiliaries, pumps and generators
Engine Department
keeps the morning and dog watches and is responsible for the maintenance of the engine room, deck, and other machineries and is in-charge of the upkeep of the main engine
Second Engineer
keeps the forenoon and first watches where he is under the direct supervision of the Chief Engineer is in-charge of all engine pumps and bunkering
Fourth Engineer
does the fitting and welding jobs and normally a dayman and the most senior among the engine ratings
Fitter
a junior engine hand usually assigned in day work
Wiper
responsible for the upkeep, repair, and maintenance of all electrical equipment and machinery
Electrician
on cargo vessels, this is a small but busy department responsible for preparing and serving meals, and for the cleaning the saloons, accommodations and alleyways
Catering Department
in-charge of the daily menu, victual supply, linen and cleaning materials
Chief Steward
employed for general messing, pantry and cleaning duties
Messman
ships which sail on schedule on a definite route for a specific destination with advertised dates of departure from, and arrival at nominated ports along their route
Liners
ships which do not keep a fixed route or sail to any particular schedule
Tramps
design of these vessels is specialized with a large of decks to provide the necessary high-class amenities like sun and observation decks, lounges, bars, dining salons, and galleys, in addition to the passenger accommodation
Passenger Ships
