Q

what is the function of a thrust block in a propeller system of a diesel engine (any)?

A
  1. It takes the force that work on the propeller and converts it into a pulling force for the ship
  2. it makes the engine work better thank to no disturbing reaction forces

Q

Why is a turbocharger used with diesel engines?

A
  1. Increased power output - it forces more air into the combustion chamber - greater power output
  2. Fuel efficiency - with the same amount of fuel, more power is generated
  3. reduced emissions - less harmful pollutants are produced thanks to better air- fuel mixing leads

16
Q

Describe hybrid propulsion system

A

Has two or more power sources,
many types,
energy saving, low environmental impact,
high initial costs

17
Q

Desribe the steam turbine propulsion system

A

used for larger ships (oil tankers mostly),
boil-off gas can be burned in boilers for steam generation

18
Q

why do we not use steam engines anymore?

A

Because steam torbines have higher efficiency

19
Q

Describe gas turbine propulsion system

A

applications for military, cruse ships, electrical propulsion ships,
has high power output, low vibration and uses high quality fuel

20
Q

describe wind and solar propulsion systems

A

uses wind sail and solar power,
uses rotor sails for Magnus effect,
environmental friendly

21
Q

describe the steps for nuclear-powered propulsion system

A
  1. hot fluid from the reactor is transported,
  2. it heats of the water and makes steam in the steam generator,
  3. steam powers the turbines,
  4. the turbines power the motor, the battery, the propeller
  5. low pressure and temperature steam is condenst into water,
water circulates back using a pump
22
Q

(ME systems) describe the shafting system

A

shafts are used to connect prime movers, gear box and propulsors. They transfer speed and torque through the entire propulsion system.
Transfers power from engine to the propeller.

23
Q

(ME systems) describe the boiler system

A

Combustion device fired with fuel to heat water or produce steam. large boilers - steam powered ships. the steam is used for process heating, space heating, electrical or mechanical power generator

24
Q

(ME systems) describe the steam power generator

A

used for propulsion systems of VLCC, LNG carries and some large tank ships. large power capacity but quiet in operation

25
(ME systems) Describe the cooling system
Used for: engine, machinery, lubrication oil, refrigeration system You cant use seawater, you use sea water for cooling freshwater
26
(ME systems) describe ballast water system
used for ships stability, to trim ships and for their good operation tanks are located in the ships double bottom and wing tanks
27
(ME systems) Describe bilge water system
Bilge is the lowest compartment on a ship, this is where rain water, leaks and other interior spillage is stored.
28
Describe the working process of a 4 stroke engine
1. stroke is the intake, piston moves from TDC to BDC which draws in fresh air 2. compression, the piston moves upward from BDC compressing the air, fuel is injected into combustion chamber near TDC 3. power stroke, high temperature and pressure burning results in burned gases pushing the piston back to BDC, producing work output 4.exhaust process, burned gasses exit the cylinder due to the pressure and are swept put by pistons
29
what is the difference between the engines?
2S engines cylinder liner has a inlet port, 4S engines doesnt
30
What are the purposes of a turbocharger?
1. To emable 2S engines scavenging process 2. to increase the density of air let in the combustion chamber = more power 3. improved fuel efficiency- with the same amount of fuel, there is more power output
31
Is a diesel engine a internal or external combustion engine
internal
32
is a steam engine/turbane a internal or external combustion engine?
External
