Maria Rules Flashcards
What is an element?
An element is only made up of one atom and cannot be split apart into any simpler substance by any chemical means.
What are the metals in the reactivity series? Most to least reactive.
Potassium Sodium Lithium Calcium Magnesium Aluminium Carbon Zinc Iron Tin Lead Hydrogen Copper Silver Gold Platinum
What is a compound?
A combination of two or more elements and contains more than one type of atom and can be split apart by chemical means.
Why are the noble gasses useful?
Because they don’t react to anything.
Top three metals in the earths crust:
Oxygen
Silicon
Aluminium
Two top elements in the earths atmosphere:
Nitrogen
Oxygen
Too element in the universe:
Hydrogen
Top three elements in your body:
Oxygen
Carbon
Hydrogen
Three most expensive metals listed:
Gold
Silver
Nickel
What do lithium sodium and potassium all have I common when they react with water
They fizz, float and move about
What does rubidium do when it reacts with water?
Bigger flame than potassium and small explosion at the end
What does Caesium do when it reacts with water?
Big flame. EXPLOSION.
Why shouldn’t we say we have calcium in our bodies?
Because we don’t have it in our body, we only have compounds containing it.
What are the threes properties that are the same for all noble gasses?
They are all colourless
They don’t react with oxygen
Don’t react with hydrochloride acid.
How do noble gas boiling points change as you go down the group?
The boiling points get higher.
Two facts about helium:
Takes lots of energy to extract.
Helium particles are small and light.
Does copper conduct?
What does it look like?
Is it an alkali or a transition metal?
Yes
Pinkies brown and shiny
Transition
Does lithium conduct electricity?
What does it look like?
Is it an alkali or a transition metal?
Yes
Shiny when freshly cut and tarnishes in air
Alkali
Does gold conduct electricity?
What does it look like?
Is it an alkali or a transition metal?
Yes
Shiny
Transition metal
Does potassium conduct electricity?
What does it look like?
Is it an alkali or a transition metal?
Yes
Shiny when freshly cut, tarnishes quickly.
Alkali
Does rhodium conduct electricity?
What does it look like?
Is it an alkali or a transition metal?
Yes
Silver coloured and shiny
Transition
Does sodium conduct electricity?
What does it look like?
Is it an alkali or aTransition metal?
Yes
Shiny when cut and tarnishes quickly
Alkali metals
What property have the halogens got in common?
They all smell of swimming pool
Give one way the halogens are different from the noble gasses
They are not all gasses and aren’t colourless.
How do you extract chlorine from rock salt?
You crush the rock salt up and put it in a beacon of warm water and stir until it has dissolved. Filter the solution into a separate beaker and place two electrodes to wires by crocodile clips . Pass an electric current through the electrodes and into the solution. The electrode that fizzes is where the chlorine is released.
Give the names of six non metals found in the human body.
Hydrogen Carbon Oxygen Sulphur Nitrogen Phosphorus.
Name two forms of carbon
Diamond and graphite.
How do you test with hydrogen?
Pops with a lighted splint.
How do you test for oxygen?
Relighted glowing splint.
How do you test for carbon dioxide?
Turns limewater milky.
Which property of metals tells you platinum is a metal?
It conducts electricity well.
Is a compound joined chemically or is it mixed?
Joined chemically.
Why do we use nitrogen instead of oxygen in crisp packets?
Because it doesn’t react.
Give three sources of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere caused by human activity:
- Burning fuel
- Deforestation
- Factories producing electricity
Why is it important to have a carbon monoxide detector in your home?
I case you have a gas leak.
What does prefix poly mean?
Several
What does prefix mono mean?
One
What is a molecule?
2 or more atoms strongly attached.
Properties of solids:
Particles touch each other
Particles are arranged in a regular pattern
Properties of metals:
Metals conduct electricity and heat
Solid at room temperature apart from mercury.
Uses of copper:
Wiring, machinery, Statue of Liberty, heating and cooling systems, telecommunications links, coins.
Uses for sodium chloride:
Seasoning, preservation, medicinal disinfection.
How does the structure of copper help explain that copper conducts heat?
Atoms vibrate when heated and the vibrations pass along the structure conducting heat through metal.
How does the structure of copper help explain that copper conducts electricity?
Electrons move around the structure and can conduct electricity.
