Define what is a special memorandum account (SMA) in a margin account.

A

it is the buyer’s excess purchasing power. For every $1 increase in MV of the margin account, $0.50 is created in the SMA. therefore, when stocks go up by $10k, SMA is worth $5k

A

as long as SMA still exists in the account, it is always the highest amount that was in the account. so if start with 10 and it would fall to 5 b/c securities decrease, as long as there is still SMA, it stays at 10
