What is a map?
A map is a flat drawing of the real world
What are symbols used for on a map?
Symbols are used to represent different places a features
What is the key?
This is the part of the map that has all the symbols use on the map
What is next to each symbol in the key?
Next to the symbol is a short explanation of what the symbol stands for
What are the colours on the map used for?
They are used to represent the heights above and below sea level or factors to do with weather and climate
Name the 12 different cardinal points on a compass

Give the definition of ‘Direction’
Direction is the approximate way of describing the position of one place in relation to another
Give the definition of ‘Degrees’
A degree is a unit of measurement used when measuring angles. We give bearings in degrees
Give the definition of ‘Bearing’
A bearing is the most accurate way of giving the direction of one place in relation to another. In bearing we use degrees
What do the grid lines on a world map include?
The world map includes the number of each line in degrees
Where are the lines of latitude measured in degrees?
They are measured in degrees north and south of the equator
Where are the lines of longitude measured in degrees?
They are measured in degrees west and east of the Greenwich Meridian
What are the 3 main lines of latitude?
The Equator, Tropic of Cancer, Tropic of Capricorn

The Greenwich Meridian

They are measured at 23.5 degrees N/S
What is the Equator measured at in degrees?
It is measured at 0 degrees

What is the definition of relief?
Relief - refers to the height and shape of the land
What is the Costal Plain?
Costal Plain - A belt of low-lying areas stretching around the coast
What is the Escarpment?
Escarpment - A high ridge made up of several mountain ranges which separate the costal plain from the inland areas
What are the Plateau Areas?
Most of the inland areas lie on a large relatively level plateau
What is a thematic map?
A thematic map is a map that is linked to a specific theme. They are produced for specific purposes
What is a political map?
A political map sows the boundaries of countries, provinces or other political divisions. They may also show other settlement features
What is a physical map?
A physical map uses different colours to show the relief of the land. They show features such as rivers, lakes, mountains etc.
What is cartogram?
A cartogram map uses squares of different sizes to symbolize different amounts
What is a climatic map?
A climatic map details the weather and climatic conditions of a area
What is a vegetation map?
A vegetation map details the plant life of a area
What is a topographical map?
A topographical map shows the physical/man-made features found on the earths surface using symbols and contour lines
