maps and photographs Flashcards
how much squares are in the national grid?
there are 25 small squares which measure 100km2
what are the 4 ways of showing height on a map?
Spot Height
Triangulation Pillar
Contour Lines
Colour
explain contour lines
each line joins an area of an equal height.
the closer the lines, the steeper the slope
how can you determine height with colour?
green represents low-land.
brown represents high-land
what are four types of slopes
- Even Slope
- Concave Slope
- Convex Slope
- Compound Slope
how can you tell if its an even slope?
the contour lines are evenly spaced out
what is the formation of a convex slope?
the contour lines are close together(steep) at the base and spaced out(gentle) at the top
what is the formation of a concave slope?
the contour lines are spaced out(gentle) at the base and close togther(steep) at the top
what is the formation of a compound slope?
a compound slope has features of a concave and a convex slope
how are rural houses represented on a map?
they are represented be black squares
what are 3 types of settlement patterns?
- Linear
- Dispersed
- Clustered or Nucleated
what is a linear settlement?
multiple houses built along a road.It is often found on the approach into towns.
what is a clustered or nucleated settelement?
several house togther at a junction or bridging point. This was historically known as a ‘clachan’ (not built to a plan).
what is a dispersed settlement?
isolated houses, usually located in an agricultural area.
what three reasons are subjective to absense of settlement?
Altitude/Height
Water/Drainage
Soils
what are primary activities?
these are activities that involve working with the land
what are the 4 main types of primary activities?
Farming
Fishing
Forestry
Mining
what are secondary activities?
activities that process or manufacture products
what are tertiary activities?
activities which provide useful services
what are three types of aerial photographs?
High oblique
Low oblique
vertical
how is known to be winter in an aerial photograph?
-fields have no crops, are ploughed(brown
in colour) and ready for planting in the
spring
-trees are bare with no leaves
-there are no animals grazing in the field
how is it known to be summer in an aerial photograph?
-fields have hay bales and are light green or
yellow in colour.
-dark green trees with foliage.
-short shadows
how is it known to be Autumn in an aerial photograph?
-leaves are yellow/orange in colour.
-animals may be grazing in fields
how is it known to be spring in an aerial photograph?
-fields are ploughed with young animals
grazing in fields.
