Q

Why do we use minutes on maps

A

It isn’t very accurate to just use degrees because the distance between the lines of latitude and longitude are too large so they are subdivided into 60’ (minutes)
Think of kilometres are divided into meters and meters are divided into centimetres etc.

Q

Ratio scale

A

Known as fraction scales
Indicated the relationship between the map and reality
1:50 000 is a ratio scale
Means 1cm on map=50 000cm in reality

Q

How to calculate using ratio scale

A

Step 1: multiply the scale with the distance on a map
Step 2: divide the answer by 10 000 (10 000 =1km); X the answer by 1 000 to convert to meters

Example:
Distance on a map is 10cm
X with scale e.g. 50 000
= 500 000x10
=500 000÷100 000
=5km
