maps And Atlases Flashcards
Latitude
The distance north or south of the equator
Longitude
The distance east or west of the prime meridian
66,5 degrees north
North pole circle
23,5 degrees
Tropic of Cancer
0 degrees
Equator
23,5 degrees south
Tropic of Capricorn
66,5 degrees south
South pole circle
Why do we use minutes on maps
It isn’t very accurate to just use degrees because the distance between the lines of latitude and longitude are too large so they are subdivided into 60’ (minutes)
Think of kilometres are divided into meters and meters are divided into centimetres etc.
How many minutes are in one degree
There are 60 minutes in one degree
What would we do if we wanted to show a spot in-between 45 degrees south and 46 degrees south
We would write 45 degrees 30’
What is a minute subdivided into
60 seconds (‘’)
Types of scales
Word scale
Line scale
Ratio scale
Word scale
E.g.
1cm=5km
Line scale
Linear scale is a bar that is divided into equal proportions used to relate the actual distance on a map
Ratio scale
Known as fraction scales
Indicated the relationship between the map and reality
1:50 000 is a ratio scale
Means 1cm on map=50 000cm in reality
