Maps Flashcards
What is a choropleth map?
Map which uses shades of colour to show data. Darkest colour = highest number.
When should you use a chlorpleth map?
When showing spatial distribution of data.
What are the strength of choropleth maps?
Shows spatial distribution.
Clear and visual.
What are the weaknesses of choropleth maps?
They are averages so disparity isn’t shown.
Shows a sudden change when really gradual.
May not give exact/actual data.
What is a proportional circle map?
Size of the circle shows the amount of data.
When should you use a proportional circle map?
Shows data and distribution.
What are the strengths of proportional circle maps?
Shows the spread of data across an area - the distribution.
Can show numbers and percentages.
What are the weaknesses of proportional circle maps?
May overlap and be difficult to read.
Not accurate: can’t find exact data.
What is a dot map?
A map that shows the spatial distribution of a variable using many equally sized dots. A dot is equal to a given value and plotted where that value occurs.
When should you use a dot map?
When showing distribution of data.
What is the strengths of dot maps?
Show distribution.
What are the weaknesses of dot maps?
Large number of dots are difficult to count.
Doesn’t show exact data.
Dot is equal to a given value - is anywhere without a dot empty?
