What is a map?
A map is a graphical representation of the earth or a part of the earth drawn from a bird’s eye view.
Types of maps:
Weather maps
Climate maps
Political maps
Choropleth maps
Population density maps
Economic maps
Regional zonal maps
Physical or relief maps
Geological maps
What is a weather map?
Weather maps provide information about weather conditions and forecasts.
What is a climate map?
Climate maps show climate patterns such as rainfall distribution of an area.
What is a political map?
Political maps show where the administrative boundaries of different countries or regions within a country are located.
What is a choropleth map?
Choropleth maps show density or value. For example such a map could show population density.
What is a population density map?
A population density map show the different concentrations of people in various regions.
What is an economic map?
Economic maps the distribution of economic activities.
What is a regional or zonal map?
Regional or zonal maps identify the different zones in a country.
What is a physical or relief map?
Physical or relief maps show the natural characteristics of a form of land and bodies of water that are found in a particular area.
What is a geological map?
A geological map shows the distribution of rocks and rock types.
Parts/Qualities of a map:Title
Title: The title of a map tells you what the map is showing.
Parts/Qualities of a map:scale
Scale: a scale is a relationship between a distance on a map and a corresponding distance on earth.
Parts/Qualities of a map:key
Key/Legend: the key/legend of a map is a visual explanation of symbols used on a map.
Parts/Qualities of a map:border
The border: the border of a map defines exactly the edges of the area shown on the map.
