Mapping The Coast Flashcards
What is hydraulic action?
The force of the water/waves hitting against the cliff
What is abrasion?
When small rocks crash into the cliff
What is attrition?
The process of rocks hitting other rocks in the water
What is corrosion?
It is a chemical reaction between the sea and the rocks
What are the 4 different types of erosion?
Hydraulic action, abrasion, attrition and corrosion
What are headlands?
Areas of land that stick out to sea
What are bays?
Sheltered areas where the land has been eroded backwards
What is the fastest eroding rock?
Boulder clay
What is the slowest eroding rock?
Granite
What is longshore drift?
The process in which particles of rock or sand are transported down the beach by the sea
What is a spit?
A spit is a length of land formed by longshore drift
What is swash?
It’s the movement of the waves coming to the beach at an angle
What is backwash?
It is when the water goes back out to sea from coming in as swash
What is the two differences between swash and backwash?
1) swash moves the sediment in land while backwash brings it out to sea
2) swash is caused by the prevailing wind while backwash is caused by gravity
What are the man-made structures that are used to prevent erosion?
Groynes, sea walls, beach nourishment, rock armour, stone Gabions, revetments and offshore breakwater.
