What are the types of maps?
Geographic, topographic, reference, planimetric, and thematic.
What do geographic maps show?
Represent earth as a flat surface.
What do topographic maps show?
Shows how the ground is shaped and provides a way to calculate the height of features.
What are contour lines?
Lines on a topographic map at a set distance from one another that help calculate the elevation.
What do reference maps show?
Information about natural worldand spatial phenomena like country borders, cities, provinces, etc.
What do planimetric maps show?
Layouts such as of a building or amusement park.
What do thematic maps show?
Themed data associated with a geographic areas. (ie. hogs/person)
Name the features of maps.
Title, legend, scale, compass.
What is the difference between geographic coordinate systems and projected coordinate systems?
Projected coordinate systems specify a location using an x/y coordinate system, geographic coordinate system is a set of numbers.
What lattitude measured from?
The equator.
What is longitude measured from?
The Prime Meridian.
What UTM zone is Alberta in?
11 and 12.
What are the coordinate units of UTM?
Northing and Easting.
What is a unit plan view?
A to-scale map created by an archaeologist of a site, showing the location and orientation of artifacts and features.
Define three-point provenience.
The depth and length from two sides (easting and northing) of the dig where an artifact or feature is found.
