General-purpose map
A map that shows general information about the features of an area. It can give a broad understanding of the location and features of an area, such as its landscape, the urban centres, and transportation routes. General-purpose maps can show railway lines, parks, provincial and national parks, bodies of water, towns and cities, political boundaries, latitude and longitude, elevations, and roads.
Map
A map is a representation of the Earth’s features on a flat surface. Maps use symbols and colours to represent the features of an area.
Compass points
Direction in words - north, south, east, west
Compass bearings
Direction in degrees. Measured clockwise from North.
Cardinal points
Four primary points on a compass - North, South, East, West
Ordinal points
Four secondary points on a compass - Morthwest, Northeast, Southwest, Southeast
Direct statement scale
A direct statement scale uses words to describe the relationship between a distance on a map and a specific distance on the Earth’s surface.
Line scale
A line divided into units of distance that represent real distance on the Earth’s surface.
Representative fraction scale
It is a ratio showing the relationship of a distance on a map to a distance on the ground.
Thematic Map
A map containing information on only one topic or theme.
Topographic map
Large-scale map showing both natural made and human features. Two important features of topographic maps are contour lines and alphanumeric grids.
Large-scale map
A large-scale map shows a small area with a large amount of detail. It can be used for residential planning and military operations.
Small-scale map
A small-scale map shows a large area with a small amount of detail. Small-scale maps show general information like physical, political, and economic information.
