MAP WORK Flashcards
What is Symbols
Symbols are signs that are used on maps
What do you call a person that draw maps and symbols
Cartographer
What symbol has solid lines usually curved, and is always found on a topographic map?
Contour lines
What symbol is always a blue line found on a map
Rivers
Which boundary line is the thickest boundary line seen on a map
Country/National Lines
A thick blue line on a map is usually used to show
a river
Symbols on a map by which rivers, roads and railway tracks are represented are
line symbols
A dotted line is usually shown on maps to represent
Track or paths
A thin blue line on a map is usually used to show
streams
Imaginary lines that are used on maps to join places of same height are called
contour lines
How many main directions are there and name them
4 North - N East - E South - S West - W
What are the main directions also called
Cardinal points
When maps are drawn with what is North indicated
With an arrow or marker
What do you find between these cardinal points
4 intermediate points
Name the four intermediate points
Northeast - NE
Southeast - SE
Southwest - SW
Northwest - NW
What is a map scale
The scale is the amount by which things are made smaller. It tells us how much smaller the map is than the real area
The scale also compare the distance between 2 place on the map with the real distance between the same 2 places on the ground.
How many types of scales are there
3
Name the 3 types of scales
Word Scale ( statement)
Ratio Scale
Linear Scale
Describe a word scale
A word Scale gives the scale in words for example one centimetre on the map represents one kilometer on the ground
Describe a ratio Scale
A ratio scale uses numbers to give the relationship between the map distance and the real ground distance: example 1:100 000
Which rules must you follow to converts a word scale to a ratio scale
1) A ratio scale must always start with 1
2) The measurements before and after the colon : must be in the same unit
example:
scale 4 cm equals 2 km
1st convert 2 km to cm (2 x 100 000 = 200 000)
then divide 4 by 4 (=1) (remember to divide the 200 000 by 4 (=50 000)
answer then is 1:50 000
Describe a linear scale
A linear scale consists of a line divided into primary units, with secondary units to the left of the 0
primary units to the left of the 0 must be same legnth as the primary unit to the right of the 0
how do you convert 1 000 000 mm in 1 km
mm to km you divide by 1 000 000
how do you convert 100 000 cm to 1 km
cm to km you divide by 100 000
