Physical Map
A map that shows the location of physical features, such as landforms, bodies of water, elevation, or resources
Political Map
A map that shows boundaries of cities, states, and countries.
Thematic Map
A map that follows a particular theme, such as population, climate, weather, etc.
Resource Map
An economic map that shows resources in a particular area
Road Map
A map that shows roads in a particular area
Plain
A large area of flat land
Plateau
A large area of flat land that is raised higher than the land around it
Mountain
A large, tall, rocky area of land that comes up out of the Earth’s surface
Hill
A mound of raised land that is smaller than a mountain
Canyon
A large crack in the earth formed by a river or earthquakes
Isthmus
A narrow strip of land that connects two large areas of land
Island
An area of land that is completely surrounded by water
Peninusla
A strip of land that extends out into a body of water
Delta
Low, water land that is formed at the mouth of a river
Valley
An area of low land between two hills or mountains
Lake
A large area of water surrounded by land
Bay
An area of water that is mostly surrounded by land
Ocean
A major body of water that covers large parts of earth
Waterfall
A place where water flows over a cliff
River
A thin waterway that allows water to flow into a lake or an ocean
Pond
A very small body of water that is surrounded by land
Strait
A channel of water that connects two large areas of water
Delta
An area of wet, soggy land with many pools of water
Map Scale
the relationship between distance on the map and distance in real life (ex: 1inch=1 mile)
