- vertical lines [meridians] that ring and intesect at the Nroth and South Pole
- measured in degrees east or west of Prime Meridian
- Prime Meridian is 0 degree longitude

- shows natural features
- landforms [mountains, valleys]
- bodies of water [rivers, lakes, oceans]
political map
shows things made by people [cities, states, capitals, countries]
specialty maps
- usually shows one kind of information
- some examples are population, rainfall, elevation

What is GPS used for?
used to find location in cars, planes, & ships

- 24 satellites in space
- orbit 12,000 miles above Earth
- Makes 2 orbits a day [traveling 7,000 mph]
- Satellites are solar powered & weigh about 2000 pounds

five large bodies of water that cover 70% of the earth
What are the 5 oceans?
Pacific Atlantic Indian Southern (up to 60 degrees South Latitude) Arctic
