Scales
Charts that show the relationship between the actual size of an area.
Cartographer
Someone who makes maps
Relative location
A location of a place in relation to another place (i.e. south or downhill)
Compass rose
Shows directions like North, South, East, and West.
Map
A flat representation of the earth
Cardinal direction
North, South, East, and West
Capital
A city where the government of a state or country is located.
Longitude
Imaginary lines that run north and south on a globe
Globe
A representation of the earth in the shape of a ball
Equator
The great imaginary line around the middle of the earth.
Grid
A pattern of lines on a map usually running north-south and east-west that is used for giving positions
Climate
Statistics of temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind, rainfall, atmospheric particle count and numerous other meteorological elements in a given region over long periods of time.
Hemisphere
One half of a sphere
Prime meridian
The location plotted as zero degrees longitude
Symbol
A sign or drawing that stands for something else
Latitude
Imaginary lines that run east and west
Absolute location
A point on the earth’s surface expressed by a coordinate system such as latitude and longitude.
Mental map
The image a person has in the “mind’s eye” of a place or area including its features
Legend/Key
The part of the map that lists and explains the symbols, colors, and scale used for the map
Meridians of longitude
Geographic coordinates commonly used for east to west measurement.
