Map Interpretation Flashcards
Law of Original Horizontality
Sequence of layers was deposited horizontally. Therefore, oldest layers are on bottom and youngest layers are on top
Law of Superposition
Oldest layers on bottom and youngest layers on top, assuming no overturned beds during deformation.
if beds are overturned, need absolute ages.
Principle of Cross Cutting Relationships
The feature that is cut is older than the feature that cuts across it.
rocks may be cut by intrusion, faulting, or unconformities.
Principle of Lateral Continuity
when sedimentary layers are deposited, they cover a large area extending in all directions
Floral and Faunal Succession
A sequence of age may be developed by looking at evolutionary development of fossils
Law of Inclusions
Inclusions in rocks are older than the rocks that host them
