allusion
A reference to a well-known person, place, event, literary work, or work of art
appendix
A section of additional information at the end of a document.
cause
A person, thing or event that makes something happen
characterization
Actions, dialogue, and narrative description that reveal a sense of a character’s personality to the reader.
classified ad
a small advertisement you put in a newspaper to buy or sell something
connotation
All the meanings, associations, or emotions that a word suggests
coupon
A small paper clipping that entitles the holder to savings on a product
debate
A formal talk between people who have different opinions.
diagram
A drawing intended to explain how something works
exposition
A narrative device, often used at the beginning of a work that provides necessary background information about the characters and their circumstances.
falling action
Events after the climax, leading to the resolution
flashback
A scene or event from the past that appears in a narrative out of chronological order, to fill in information or explain something in the present.
foreshadowing
one or more letters at the top of the page of a reference book to guide the reader in locating the word
headline
A line of large type used to gain the reader’s attention; the title of the copy or story.
hyperbole
A figure of speech in which the truth is exaggerated for emphasis or humorous effects.
idiom
A common, often used expression that doesn’t make sense if you take it literally. Example: I’m in a pickle.
