maos Flashcards
intro
expand China and restore it back to a powerful nation
backdrop of cold war and domino theory??
talk about losses and wins and how the losses outweigh the wins and the wins are underlying losses
success x4
Tibet
military - 40k Chinese to 8500 Tibetans = bolstered Mao’s public image as a strong and competent leader
complete control - 17 point agreement 1951 23rd May, PLA take position
modernised region and built new roads and installed electricity and land reform well in west
=intereference in all aspects of tibetan life eg schooling and culture (destroyed monasteries)
=could not jsut exploit the region but convert to communist annex, through destruction of national identity and imposition
failure x7
KOREA
eastern blco misconception, invadded on the 25th June 1950
military expenditure -in less than 6 motnhs 1/4 million under peng dehuai
180,000 chinese dead
=not in china’s best interests, should be focusing on domestic recovery rather than military expenditure
unprepared - PVA 2 mil volunteers sent in wiith limited heavy weapons and no armoured vehicles
-trash comapred to the UN forces
economic - cost china 2.6 bil Yuan
=pressured into joining a war that wasnt on his best interests on a domestic and international scale.
although he wasnt defeated, he still sustained significant and unforecasted losses, completely interrupting China’s plans for China’s reformation a sit diverted industrial resoources that were set aside for growth but went to the war effort
USSR good
70% of Chia’s industries were concentrated on the coastal area
prolonged period of instability
USSR bad x3
-economic - 60 mil $ a year -> BUT 1% interest every year
delayed domestic growth and inhibiting the CCP’s regime
-undermined Mao completely - Eastern European Comm Countries promised ‘immediate’ military and other assistance when Mao gets provided ‘all possible’ -> this relationship with stalin compeltely undermines Mao’s authority and legitimacy
-undermines Mao’s credibility as his main main manifesto point is not allowing foreign influence - yet he is indebted to the USSR?
conc
although experienced successes - they were not exactly resounding successes as his foreign policy led to even more debt to the USSR and unforecasted losses delaying progress.
