Manufacturing: Topic 1 Flashcards
How many units are produced per annum in low production?
1 - 100
How many units are produced per annum in medium production?
100 - 10,000
How many units are produced per annum in high production?
10,000 - 1,000,000
What is casting?
Casting involves pouring/injecting molten material into a prepared cavity. On solidification the metal takes the form of the cavity
What material is used in casting?
Mostly Metals
Why use casting?
Excellent for large and complex shapes, particularly with internal features. Can produce net shape or near net shape components
What is Sand Casting?
Sand casting is ametal casting process characterised by usingsandas the mould material.
What is Evaporative Casting?
Evaporative-patterncastingis a type ofcastingprocess that uses a pattern made from a material that will evaporate when the molten metal is poured into the molding cavity. The most commonevaporative-pattern material used is polystyrene foam.
What is Investment Casting?
A technique for making small, accurate castings in refractory alloys using a mould formed around a pattern of wax or similar material which is then removed by melting.
What is Low Pressure Die Casting?
Low pressure casting is a development of the permanent mould process, in which the metal is introduced into the chill mould from below. Gas pressure holds the metal in the die until it solidifies.
What is High Pressure Die Casting?
High pressure casting is where identical parts are cast at high production rates by injecting molten metal under pressure into a metal die.
It provides the best surface finish
What factors influence precision in casting?
